Reedsy Book Reviews
Get the fan, the ice cubes, and the sweet tea – this one will leave you hot!
In line with some of the great mystery writers of the past, R.D. Hathaway gives us a prolific and ‘edge of your seat’ read with his sequel, Hidden Passion. I received a copy of the book from Reedsy for review.
Leaning more toward those ages 30 and above, the 120,000-word novel would be found interesting by any fan of Agatha Christie, Mary Higgins Clark, or James Patterson. It would be a great book club read of the month. Each page has the reader hurriedly reading through to find out what happens next, and I will go ahead and tell you: You won’t be disappointed!
The story revolves around a mid-western newspaper reporter with a chip (or two or three) on her shoulder who gets in the way of those on the ‘dark side’ if you will. Being a nosy news reporter leads Rennie Haran into a battle that not only threatens her career but her life and those around here. Yet, she keeps looking as finding the truth is what she wants…And this strong woman character that the writer has created gets what she wants.
The mystery doesn’t stop there, it follows her on a ‘mental health’ vacation to Italy – Rennie gets knee-deep into it this time – and finally realizes who her rival is – and time is ticking away. As the secret is getting closer to being revealed, Rennie, and others, realize their lives are hanging in the balance … but that doesn’t stop her. And it won’t stop you from turning the pages until the final conclusion.
Get the handheld fan out, the batteries, the sweet tea and your favorite blankie – this story is going to have you hot, thirsty, and pleasantly exhausted in the end. Kudos to R.D. Hathaway for this novel – the second to his first. A lot of times folks say the sequel isn’t as good as the first – well, Hidden Passion blows the first out of the water. Could there be a third in the works?
